Abstract

Lipids play an important role in the architecture of photosynthetic membranes and probably in their functioning. Four major lipid classes comprise the lipid content of the thylakoids of higher plant chloroplasts, eucaryotic algae and cyanobacteria. These are the galactolipids, monogalactosyldiglyceride (MGDG) and digalactosyldiglyceride (DGDG), the glycolipid sulfoquinovosyldiglyceride (SQDG) and the phospholipid phosphatidylglycerol (PG).
