Lipid contamination of the order of 0.05 mole% in dimyristoyl lecithin is shown to have a profound influence on the equilibrium spreading pressure in the region of the gel-liquid-crystal transition temperature T c . This method is proposed as a means of testing routinely for very low levels of lipid contamination in lecithin.
