Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship between the expression of mdr1 gene in human primary hepatocellular carcinoma (PHC) and juxtacancerous tissues and multidrug resistance (MDR) of the tumor. Methods The expression of mdr1 gene in human PHC and juxtacancerous tissues was quantitatively detected with RT-PCR, a highly sensitive and specific method, in 48 cases of PHC. Of the 48 cases, 18 had received the treatment of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) before hepatectomy. Results The positive rate of mdr1 gene expression was significantly higher in the PHC tissue than in the juxtacancerous tissues (P<0.01). The mdr1 gene over-expressed in the PHC tissue after TACE. Conclusion In addition to the intrinsic drug resistance, the PHC cells develop acquired drug resistance after TACE. Overexpression of mdr1 gene might be one of the mechanisms of MDR in PHC
