Abstract

The evanescent light is the light field accompanying the total reflection of the incident light beam and extending over a distance of the order of the wavelength. By using a neon-helium discharge plasma, we have excited by this light the metastable neon atoms lying close to the discharge cell wall, and applied the optogalvanic detection method. We have succeeded in detecting the signal resulting from the interaction of the atoms and the light field.
