Abstract

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) pathogenic for humans and animals produce two classes of enterotoxins. The heat labile toxin (LT) is of high molecular weight, consists of two subunits, is functionally, structurally and genetically related to the enterotoxin of Vibrio cholerae, and is homologous among different strains of LT producing E. coli (5, 14). Its mechanism of action involves the activation adenylate cyclase (8). The heat stable toxin (ST) is of low molecular weight and acts by stimulating guanylate cyclase (9).
