B. ; Feldman, P. A. Abstract The detection of HCC-13CCCN, HCCC-13CCN, and HCCCC-13CN (J = 9-8) is reported in the molecular envelope of the carbon star IRC + 10216. By comparing reliable values for the C-13/C-12 isotopic ratio in IRC + 10216 with the present results, it is concluded that HC-(12)5N is probably optically thick, which in turn suggests that the gas distribution must be quite clumpy, or at least highly inhomogeneous, with a volume filling factor of about 0.1 percent to a few percent.
