Abstract

ELISA for malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) was positive in 30 of 128 samples from cattle of affected herds in California and Colorado; the serum neutralization test was negative. 11 of another 47 samples from experimentally and naturally infected cattle in Colorado were positive to ELISA, while 4 samples contained small amounts of neutralizing antibody. Among 35 serum samples from cattle in Indiana, positive for bovid herpesvirus 1, 11 were positive to MCF herpesvirus, although all of 88 samples from Oklahoma positive for herpesvirus 1 were negative in ELISA for MCF.
