Abstract

Electron microscopy revealed virus-like particles (VLP) in 5 of 12 squamous cell carcinomas induced in hamster tongue by topical application of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene in acetone. The VLP morphology was characteristic of R-type VLP; VLP were exclusively within the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum of cancer cells. No VLP were detected in non-tumourous control tissues. On the basis of the ultrastructural appearances, a scheme of the morphogenesis of R-type VLP is proposed.
