Abstract

In real-time network stationing, as the number of connected devices are increased in IoT, handling the attacks in routing protocols such as RPL- Routing protocol for Low Power and lossy networks has become the major challenge. In literature, some of the solutions proposed on RPL attacks were not appropriate in detection rate and their computational overhead. This paper aimed at introducing a new attack called Flooding attack and counter based detection algorithm in RPL protocol. In Flooding attack, the motes are straightly bombarded with huge packets by malicious mote thus overburdening the motes and network. This type of attack is also known as DDoS-Distributed Denial of service. A prevention technique IDS-Intrusion detection system is proposed in this paper to detect and counter Flooding attacks by monitoring the number of packets sent and received from each neighbor mote. According to performance evaluations conducted on Cooja simulator under different real-time conditions. The proposed IDS algorithm can detect Flooding attack with high accuracy and true positive rate. Additionally, the proposed IDS improves 5%-10% in throughput,20%-30% reduction in delay time and 10%-12% improvementin packet delivery ratio.
