Abstract

On the road, a driver’s emotional states can affect their driving performance. While positive emotions can lead to careful driving, negative emotions can unfortunately cause reckless driving behaviors. Therefore, contactless detecting the driver’s emotional state in real time can provide much needed measures to prevent traffic accidents. This study reports an affordable interactive system that can detect six different emotions of a driver based on facial expressions. This working prototype utilizes facial recognition technologies that can function without the driver’s attention and hence provide a natural user interface for further interactive treatments to alleviate the driver’s negative emotions.
