Abstract

In the glaciologic part of the introduction, the important role that Antarctica plays in Global Change is explained in relationship to temperature change, changes in atmospheric conditions - CO2 budget — and sea-level rise. There are two main approaches to investigate mass changes in the Antarctic Ice Sheet: a) changes in elevation of the entire ice sheet, and b) changes in the outlet glaciers of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Changes in elevation can be monitored when comparing maps of different times, for instance, a GEOSAT map and an ERS-1 map in this Atlas, or more time points, as is illustrated in the section on Lambert Glacier. The outlet glaciers, ice streams, and ice shelves are key features, because they are most sensitive and change is most evident there. Flux of ice into the ocean occurs across the margin of Antarctica, the ice-ocean boundary.
