Abstract

The spectra of e +, e − particles, generated by the peripheral interactions of fully stripped heavy ions crossing in a collider, are examined in detail. Particular attention is paid to the energy, momentum, rapidity, and angular distribution of the emitted particles. In addition, the double differential cross section is calculated for a range of rapidity and perpendicular projections of the lepton momenta. The results given here provide a definitive study of e +, e − backgrounds for detectors at heavy-ion colliders.
