Abstract

A triaxial rotor model with independent inertia and electric quadrupole tensors is applied to nuclei that have certain $E2$ matrix elements equal to zero. It is shown that such vanishing $E2$ matrix elements are explained by the model as a destructive interference effect. The example of $^{196}\mathrm{Pt}$ is considered.
