Abstract

Trans-Saharan migration has existed for millennia, but with increased desperation in Africa and increased prosperity in Europe, migratory pressures on North Africa are reaching critical levels. Morocco is so close to Spain that on a clear day one can look across the Strait and see a different continent. This proximity has made Morocco a portal between Europe and Africa for centuries. As Europe grows richer, it seems that Africa gets left behind economically, greatly increasing the impetus for South-to-North migration. As a result, Morocco plays an important role in the development of migration trends between these two continents. Although much is known about the journey between Morocco and Spain, very little research has been done regarding would-be migrants’ journey across Africa to Morocco.
