Abstract

As in the entire urbanization process, large undertakings that drive trade, employment and income drive the flow of people and the urban development of a city. At this juncture, it is possible to affirm that the city of Canaã dos Carajás undergoes a process of economic growth and development due to the influen-ce of the widely exploited mining sector in the region. The objective of this research is to correlate the high rate of population growth with the growing mass of solid waste produced, addressing the modifying role of cooperatives in the disposal of these wastes and how they influence social, environmental and economic issues in the management process.
