Abstract

This chapter explores perspectives of mental health in Black communities through the lens of the author’s personal experiences. The goal is to expose systems of oppression, increase awareness, and promote action to work toward more health equity for Black communities. The overreaching themes discussed include: racial trauma; stigma; mistrust of mainstream health and medical services; and lack of access to care. The chapter concludes with a call to action for researchers, practitioners, and community members to change the system and promote mental wellness within Black communities.
