Abstract

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) is a rare variant of ameloblastoma, exhibiting peculiar features. DA is more frequently seen in the anterior region of the jaw, without a predilection for gender or race. The aim of this study was to present a case of DA mimicking a fibro-osseous lesion. A 47-year-old asymptomatic woman was referred for surgical treatment of a lesion in the upper right maxilla, involving teeth #22 and #23, with a histological diagnosis of odontogenic fibroma. An intraoral examination showed normal mucosa with a discrete increase of volume. The main radiographic aspect was a hypodense multilocular lesion with imprecise limits. Based on the clinical localization and radiographic features, including conventional radiographic images and cone beam computed tomography, the histological diagnosis was reviewed and a new diagnosis was of DA was established. Conservative surgical treatment was conducted and the patient is under rigorous follow-up control.
