Abstract

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) is a rare benign tumor arising from odontogenic epithelium. DA has marked predilection to occur in the anterior regions of the jaws and it is more common in male patients. A black female patient, 51 years old, attended the Oral Medicine clinic complaining about a painful swelling on the right side of the face. Intraoral examination showed a large lesion involving the hemi-maxilla in the right side. Panoramic exam showed a lesion with mixed radiolucent and radiopaque appearance, resembling a fibro-osseous lesion. The diagnostic hypotheses were fibrous dysplasia, cemento-ossifying fibroma, and DA. An incisional biopsy was performed and histopathologic analysis confirmed DA. The patient was submitted to resection of the lesion and after 1 year of follow-up no recurrence was observed.
