Abstract
Virtual assembly (VA), one of key technologies in advanced manufacturing field, is a promising application of virtual reality in design and manufacturing field. It has drawn much attention from industries and research institutes. In this paper, through the analysis to the theory of virtual assembly, with the aid of Pro/E to establish models and transform models into the form of VMRL form, we design a three-dimensional interactive virtual assembly system, making full use of Java language, EAI (external authoring interface) provided by VRML2.0 and script node of VRML. According to the principle of volumetric 3-dimensions display, we realized the stereoscopic displays in virtual assembly environment, which enables this assembly system to have good immersive feels, and realized the application of virtual assembly to the mechanical product design based on VRML and Java. Finally, an application example is introduced to testify the feasibility of the virtual assembly system prototype
