Abstract

Historical development of the glass industry in India is given. Figures of the installed capacity and actual production of items like bottler, containers, sheet glass, bangles, etc., are given. It is seen that only of the installed capacity is utilized at present. Some types of glasses like containers for the modern antibiotics like penicillin and streptomycin, as also optical glass for scientific and opthalmic use and fibre glass are not made yet in this country and these should be installed.A plea is made for the use of local raw materials to bring about regional self sufficiency.
