Abstract

The expected greater demand for coal requires improved information on the nation9s coal resources. State and national programs for evaluating coal resources must incorporate not only basic information such as coal thickness, depth, reliability of data, and rank, but also a broad range of other characteristics such as quality, minability, and land use. Such information must be retrievable in different combinations to be useful to those who need new assessments of coal resources. Computers will become important tools for meeting these requirements. Sources of data and uncertainties in the estimates should be documented.
