Abstract

A method for evaluating performance of fruit crop cultivars or rootstocks is proposed. The method is a convenient procedure for assessing the performance of one or more test lines with reference to a designated standard for a few years and then predicting the commercial potential of the test materials. For each line, the desirability value (DV) = (Δ between least desirable mean for that variable and the mean of same variable for the test line is divided by (÷) LSD P = 0.05 for that variable) + 1.00 (so that value of DV does not = 0). Each variable is weighted (W) on a scale of 1 to 9 based on its economic importance. The desirability index (DI) = {Σ(DV × W) value of the test material ÷ Σ(DV × W) value of the standard} × 100. A test material is considered superior with DI > standard or inferior if DI < standard.
