Abstract

Because the complicated design parameters of sulfur cathodes greatly influence the corresponding energy density, disclosing compatible regulation among active materials, tailored hosts, and elaborate cathodes is of great significance. This review summarizes the recent progress of sulfur cathodes classified by sulfur encapsulation, host architecture, and cathode configuration, aiming to illustrate their synergetic contribution to the improved electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. The emphasis is centered on the integrated design principles with a focus on intrinsic mechanisms underlying their specific functions, providing a useful guideline for the future design of high energy density and long-term cycling Li-S batteries.
