Abstract
A novel type of silica-based chromatographic column without particle-packed structure has been recently developed. A monolithic silica gel having continuous gel skeletons and through-pores together with open mesopores is the key material of this `rod column'. The principle and procedure of designing the built-in pore structure is explained.
