Abstract

This paper is written as a guide for any instructor seeking to develop the mathematical modeling process or open-ended problem solving in their courses. We describe a pedagogical approach to create mini modeling problems to develop the modeling process. These are problems that fall between traditional homework problems and open-ended modeling problems, and focus on specific aspects of the modeling process. Implementing such mini modeling problems is a means of scaffolding the modeling process to engage the students in smaller stages of modeling and prepare them for the full modeling process. This is intended as a means to empower the students so they can engage confidently in the modeling process.
