Abstract

The First-of-Series (FoS) fully configured multiplet for the Superconducting FRagment Separator at FAIR was designed and manufactured. The cold mass column comprises three quadrupole, two embedded octupole, three sextupole and one steering dipole magnet. Its weight and length are 45 tons and 6.5 m, respectively. The magnets are cooled in a common liquid helium bath by up to 1600 liters of liquid helium. The cold test is currently underway at a dedicated cryogenic magnet test facility at CERN in the framework of a GSI/CERN collaboration. This paper presents the magnetic and cryogenic design as well as the manufacturing of the multiplet.
