Abstract

There is no greater potential for personal expression than building one's own shelter. For this reason alone, every effort should be made to enable new home construction to be sustainable for generations to come. Today, we realise that to be truly sustainable, it is not enough to imagine methods of minimising damage to the environment; instead, the results must have a net positive impact on it. Through the experiences and the information gathered and organised, we can demonstrate to residential design professionals and executors that it is absolutely possible to build a home that is beautiful, pleasing, functional, healthy, affordable and life-sustaining. By designing and adapting the places where we live in an ecologically responsive style, we can contribute to the well-being of our planet and its limited natural resources. Buildings as they are designed and used today symbolise unrestrained consumption of energy and other natural resources, with a consequent negative environmental impact. In India, the residential and commercial sector consumes 25% of the total electrical usage of the country, and a major portion of this is utilised in buildings. Green architecture or sustainable architecture is an integrated approach to building design which involves the judicious use of resources and application of efficiency measures, improved environmental quality of the planet, including air, water and land, protecting limited resources and ecosystems. Attention is to be drawn on natural resource and material conservation, minimising the use of non-renewable natural resources and buildings with low-impact materials. We as designers should ensure improved indoor air and environmental quality along with energy efficiency, lower energy consumption and promotion of renewable energy sources. Natural resources are to be saved following water efficiency and conservation, waste reduction and management, optimised operational and maintenance practices for a healthy planet for future generations.
