Abstract

This paper presents a review and comparison of high-efficiency LED drivers based on single-stage flyback converters. Three different flyback designs with Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM), Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) and quasi-resonant (QR) are put into consideration. The results show that unlike conventional flyback converter, which works in hard switching region, the QR flyback converter has fewer switching losses and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI) thanks to switching on the MOSFET at the valley point. For validation purposes, a 70 W QR flyback LED driver prototype is designed and tested in the laboratory. Experimental results indicate that at rated load condition, efficiency is approximately 91.3 % with Power Factor (PF) higher than 0.98, and THD lower than 7 % at universal input voltage.
