Abstract

SUMMARY A course on design methods for engineering and industrial design undergraduate students is described. Engineering students in the second year of a BEng. programme at the University of Limerick and also second year BDes. students at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin take this course. It has been put together specifically for students involved in product design. Attention is drawn to the detailed syllabus which contains core elements of traditional design methods. Some less conventional topics have been either borrowed from other disciplines and adapted to suit a design context or developed by the authors themselves. The course is seen as a ‘toolbox’ of design techniques. The authors explain how the course is run and assessed. The philosophy of the course is encapsulated in the quotations at the beginning and end of the paper.
