Abstract

By engineering polymers that attract and bind liver, nerve, and other cells, scientists are beginning to create artificial organs that are biologically “real” and may one day be used to supplement or replace damaged body parts. A sidebar looks at efforts, such as growing artificial skin on collagen matrices, that are close to clinical use.
