Abstract

Abstract Production of oil and gas from unconsolidated formations often results in the migration of formation material into the wellbore. A popular and effective method for stabilizing unconsolidated formations uses a high density gravel pack which is placed around a screen and out the perforation tunnels. A thickened, retarded acid system containing fluoboric acid has been developed as a carrying fluid for placement of the high-density gravel pack. This fluid combines the functions of gravel-carrying capacity, viscosity reduction, stimulation and clay and fines stabilization into a single fluid. Laboratory flow data on unconsolidated formation material demonstrates the stimulation and clay-stabilizing properties of this fluid. Field results are included which demonstrate the effectiveness of the fluid in high density gravel-pack treatments.
