Abstract

This paper addresses a design trade-off analysis of foil-wound medium frequency transformers for solid-state transformer applications. A design methodology is proposed in the study. A comparative study is performed on the effect of the choice of conducting material and the number of parallel winding layers on the design objectives. The analysis in this paper uses a combination of numerical and analytical loss estimation methods for various multi-physical loss components of MFTs. The advantages and limitations of using foil conductors in the MFT windings are carried out.
