Abstract

Abstract In the present work, a series of Benzothiazole based Schiff base ligand 2-((E)-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-4-nitrophenol and their Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by physical, analytical and spectral data such as elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, ESI-Mass, UVvis, powder XRD, SEM and EDX studies. Based on spectro-analytical experimental data a square planar geometry is confirmed for all these metal complexes. The synthesized Schiff base acts as monobasic bi-dentate ligand which coordinates through imine nitrogen and phenolic oxygen atom to the metal. The metal complexes studies here include interaction of DNA binding studies with CT (Calf thymus) DNA through an intercalative mode. The DNA binding properties of metal complexes have been investigated by using UV–vis electron absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectra and viscosity measurement techniques. DNA photo cleavage ability evaluated by agarose gel electrophoresis method their transition metal complexes. Moreover, the antibacterial studies five bacterial species was evaluated for metal complexes. Cytotoxicity studies of Schiff base ligand and their metal complexes have been also investigated.
