Abstract

Simultaneous polymerization of polyacrylic, polyamine, and polyepoxy monomers offers the potential to generate a novel polymer backbone with new and beneficial properties. The Aza-Michael addition of amines to acrylates is fast and exothermic and can thus increase the rate of amine epoxy reactions producing poly amino-ester-alcohol polymer backbones. The polymerization is shown to be remarkably tolerant of organic and aqueous solvent interactions. The resultant polymers are transparent and possess good compressive and thermal properties that are amenable to polymer design. The polymers of this article are predicated on efficient polymerization of the acrylate and amine functionalized monomers, so preliminary rules for their polymerization are provided as a preamble to the hybrid polymers with polyepoxy monomers.
