Abstract

This paper presents results of design studies of high-field dipole magnets based on Nb3Sn shell-type coils performed to explore the possibilities and limitations of Nb3Sn accelerator magnets. To achieve the maximum bore field of 13-16 T, 3- and 4-layer coils were used. The coil design concepts, conductor parameters, results of magnetic and mechanical analysis are presented and discussed. Different conductor grading techniques are described and compared. An innovative design of a 3-layer coil without interlayer splices is described
