Abstract
Upgrade of the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) that includes the installation of a poloidal divertor and the addition of sufficient ECRH to achieve H-mode operation has been proposed. The upgrade proposal also includes the installation of a high-energy heavy-ion beam probe that can carry out measurements over the complete plasma cross section. The beam for the upgrade system should, in particular, be capable of probing the null point, investigating the narrowband fluctuations observed on the inside midplane with laser scattering, and looking for the poloidal asymmetries with and without the ergodic magnetic limiter. On the basis of trajectory calculations of the 1+ primary and 2+ secondary Tl ion beam at a magnetic field of 2.16 T at the center of the plasma, the optimized locations of the accelerator, the sweep system, and the energy analyzer have been found. >
