Abstract

The design characteristics, construction aspects and operational techniques of the lift net were studied in Wular Lake of Kashmir. Lift net locally called as Khuri zal was one of the main gear operated in Wular Lake. PA multifilament was used for the construction of the net. The major catch from Wular Lake comprised of Cyprinus spp and Schizothorax spp. The fishing operations were carried out throughout the lakes, mainly near to the identified landing centres and fishing villages except the areas inundated by aquatic vegetation. Lift net was operated mainly in the morning hours. The catch on per day basis was 5 to 10kg and was sold in the local market and/or consumed within the family.
