Abstract

This work is mainly dedicated to implementation of bidirectional DC-DC converter for DC storage systems in medium power Microgrid applications. Microgrids are gaining immense popularity in present day scenario due to availability of flexible power management strategies and cost effectiveness. DC Microgrid mainly consists of PV system and Battery system. Battery system plays very important role in improving dynamic response of the microgrid. While designing power modulators for DC storage system, efficiency is a major concern. This work is dedicated to increase the efficiency of power modulators used for DC storage in microgrid [4]. In the battery system, a bidirectional converter is needed to facilitate bidirectional power flow. For that purpose we have selected two quadrant buck-boost topology instead of using conventional H-bridge or cuk topologies. Also instead of using conventional switching, we have used synchronous switching technique. Synchronous switching eliminates the power diode loss which constitutes major part of total losses in converter resulting into increased efficiency [2]. The corresponding MATLAB simulation results confirming the improved response are also included.
