Abstract
Design is not just a building, an interior, or a preserved landscape; it is a means of acting in and transforming the world. This chapter is partially provoked by those conversations with Michael Speaks, and by the realization that further qualifications need to be articulated in order to differentiate the positions, aims and ambitions of different approaches within the growing field of design research field in architecture, and the engagement with epistemological questions that these positions provoke. Recent developments in the theories and methodologies of participatory action research emphasize the strong relation between feminist research approaches and action research. The research and teaching practices developed within the context of FATALE and within Critical Studies in Architecture, as described above, thus now forms part of a larger context in which political and social issues are specifically foregrounded. .
