Abstract

The actual earth pressure exerted on a strutted soil support system in cohesionless soil has been hard to measure. Apparent Earth Pressure (AEP) diagrams are commonly used to design strutted excavations. An AEP diagram is a function of a soil angle of internal friction (φ') and its bias. Also, the bias in an AEP diagram was estimated using a simplified linear earth pressure diagram. The analysis resulted in recommended load factors applied to AEP and reliability levels in the design of a strutted excavation in cohesionless soils.
