Abstract

This paper explores the optimization of design parameters in a perpendicular recording channel. Specifically, using a simple channel model and a simple detection and coding system, we calculate a family of "design curves" from which we can determine, for a given set of model parameters, the maximum user density that can be achieved with a specified sector error rate (SER), along with the corresponding code rate. Conversely, given a target user density and SER, we can determine the acceptable range of model parameters.
