Abstract

A novel coplanar probe-fed patch antenna with a modified ground plane for wideband applications is proposed. The antenna consists of two symmetrical corrugations beside the triangular patch radiator and a U-shaped ground plane. A significant improvement on the impedance bandwidth up to about 4∶1 can be obtained. The experimental impedance bandwidth, determined by −10dB reflection coefficient, is greater than 114% (0.66 to 2.41 GHz). The proposed antenna has a small overall size of 0.62λ × 0.46λ × 0.19λ and a patch size of 0.56λ × 0.28λ at 1.45 GHz (center frequency). Good agreement between the measurement and simulation has been achieved. Meanwhile, the proposed antenna exhibits good broadside radiation characteristics over the whole operating bandwidth. Details of the proposed design and experimental results are presented and discussed.
