Abstract

This paper presents a UHF RFID tag with on-chip spiral antenna based on the principle of inductive coupling. The Whole chip die area is 1mm² and the integrated antenna is fabricated with the top metal layer in 0.18μm standard CMOS process. When the reader generating an output power of 20dbm, the fully integrated tag can achieve 4mm communication distance. An off-chip meandered shape antenna, magnetically coupled to the chip die, has been designed to overcome the reading range limitation. The measured reading range is raised to about 3 m in free space with 1 W RF power output of the reader. As there is no physical connection between the chip die and the off-chip far-field antenna, this structure can be used as an economical and convenient method for RFID tag packaging.KeywordsRFID TagOn-chip AntennaInductive Coupling
