Abstract

The tubing bomb microreactor (TBMR) is widely used for coal liquefaction and related high pressure model compound reactions. In this work mass transfer and mixing characteristics of the TBMR have been investigated for coal liquefaction and model compound reactions under a variety of reaction conditions by using paraffinic, aromatic, and hydrogen donor solvents, as well as N 2 and H 2 atmospheres. Both horizontal and vertical TBMR orientations, as well as the influence of mixing ball agitators, were investigated. A horizontally oriented TBMR which minimizes mass transfer influences and catalyst attrition was developed.
