Abstract

In this paper, the rotary VCM actuator for small form factor (SFF) optical disk drive (ODD) is designed. The rotary VCM actuator needs high driving sensitivity, sufficient structural stiffness and thermal stability. These three performances are closely connected, so the coupled-field analysis of three kinds of physics is established. In order to establish thermal analysis model, the heat generated from voice coils is analyzed and convection heat transfer coefficient of the rotary VCM actuator is defined by thermal experiment. Overall performance which consists of driving performance, structural stiffness and thermal stability is optimized through design of experiments (DOE) and optimization procedures. At last, optimized actuator is confirmed that it can satisfy all specifications: size, driving performance, structural stiffness and thermal stability.
