Abstract

This paper presents a novel scheme to design a nonlinear Variable Structure Controller (VSC) for excitation control in order to mitigate transient instability of a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) power system. The theory of design of Super Twisting Sliding Mode Controller (STSMC) is employed to estimate the nonlinear control law. The STSMC combines the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and a robust exact differentiator which rejects any type of unknown external disturbances that may affect the system. The performance of this robust nonlinear controller has been compared with the performance of zero dynamics design of excitation controller in the face of power system disturbances. It has been observed that the SMIB system with STSMC reaches to its equilibrium position more quickly and become asymptotically stable than the zero dynamic design of excitation controller.
