Abstract

The concept of superconductive magnetic energy storage has been recently studied. It has been found that single layer solenoids buried in bedrock are economically more attractive than other configurations such as dipoles or toroids. The author presents relations that connect the energy stored and magnetic field to different cost related parameters. Analytical expressions for a variety of parameters such as magnetic fields, magnetic pressure, stresses, and forces are given, and the magnetics of single layer solenoids are reviewed.
