Design of Simulation Experiments

Abstract

Following the exhausting demands of constructing and testing the model, it is frequently the case that insufficient time and thought are given to experimentation with systems models. However, careful planning of simulation experiments is essential if the potential usefulness of a model is to be fully realised. Appropriately designed experiments can enhance understanding of the relationships and behaviour of the system in explanatory studies or can reveal how management might control the system so as best to achieve certain goals in prescriptive (normative) studies. However, the experimental techniques used may be very different from those in conventional (real-life) experimentation and, in this chapter, we will examine the design and analysis of computer simulation experiments.
