Abstract

A new approach is proposed for the design of nonseparable linear phase PR filter banks. The design is based on first finding a suitable lowpass filter, while the remaining three filters are obtained through the use of signed shuffling operations on the coefficients of that filter. This leads to a set of filters that use the same coefficients in different shift positions and with different signs, allowing very efficient implementation of the filter bank. All filter bank requirements such as orthogonality, regularity, as well as criteria such as maximisation of coding gain, are then all imposed on the coefficients of the lowpass section.
