Abstract

This paper presents a low-power active RFID tag in UHF band. The tag introduces an additional co-processing digital circuit into the traditional microcontroller based active RFID tag. It consists of an ultra low power microcontroller, a co-processing digital circuit implemented on CPLD, a low power RF transceiver, micro-strip antenna and an on-board battery. The paper chooses MSP430F149, EPM240T100, Si4420 realizing the hardware, and carries out experiment to certify the tag's function and power consumption performance. Experimental results show that, the new structure can reduce the microcontroller power consumption obviously, thus, can reduce the whole system energy consumption in the multi-tags conditions. However, because of the high power consumption of CPLD, the power consumption results of this implemented tag are not satisfactory.
